Less Is More: A Classic Set-Up With the SkyFiller Wings

Traditional lighting setups for documentaries, streaming, or broadcasting often require multiple pieces of equipment, including grip and modifiers, to achieve the desired look. A common setup involves using a softbox and a monolight-style LED, which can take up two or three bags of gear. Another popular setup, book lighting, requires two light panels and a third light to create soft, bounced light. Add in the stands needed for flags, and the load becomes both heavy and expensive.

These same lighting setups can be accomplished with a smaller footprint using our SkyFiller Wings LED panels. Take book lighting as an example: for this setup we used two Fotodiox Sun Scrims –one with the silver bounce side and one with a 2-stop diffusion cover. For lighting, we used a Fotodiox Warrior 300XR hard-source LED to bounce light off the silver reflective side, softening it through the diffusion. The Warrior 300XR was set to 50% power at 4500K.

Using three stands, two scrims, and the Warrior 300XR, we were able to create soft, cinematic lighting. However, this setup takes time. What if you could reduce that setup time by 80% and still achieve the same results?

Enter the SkyFiller Wings 1x4 200W Prizmo Edition (RGBW+T) SFW-200LC. We replicated the above setup by positioning the SkyFiller Wings where the diffused panel was, creating the same quality of light. The SkyFiller Wings’ illuminated surface is already diffused by a 1-stop acrylic screen, and the included diffusion panel adds an additional two stops of diffusion.

With the SkyFiller Wings, you not only reduce the amount of equipment needed, but you also gain flexibility in modifying the light source. The panel offers a degree of harsher lighting when needed, and multiple panels can be used for larger productions requiring something like the Fotodiox Giant Sun Scrim.
