The Leica M 6-bit lens coding system works together with firmware in the newer camera bodies (starting with M8) to correct for various lenses. The lens coding is called ‘6-bit coding‘ because six fields in the bayonet ring are marked in black or white to represent a number from 1 to 64 in binary code. The information on the lens is used to help the camera to optimize image quality and this information is also written into the EXIF image file. More information along with a list of the coding sequences can be found on the Leica Blog.
